There are only 14 places in our two-week residencies, so the application process is competitive. We received 57 applications for our 2015 residency. For real. Fifty-seven! It was a bit of a shock.

The ideal participants will be emerging or established cartoonists who want to level-up a bit. We're looking for artists seeking to extend their skill set by taking on a larger or more difficult project, or artists mid-way through a large project. Applicants will be chosen based on the merit of their prior work, the strength of their current work-in-progress and evidence of their ability to follow through on an ambitious comics project.

To apply for the 2017 Comic Art Workshop in Indonesia, you need to be over 18 and be able to:

• Get yourself to Yogyakarta for the beginning of our residency on October 22;
• Attend the Workshop until it is completed on November 5;
• Make your own way home;
• Cover the residency fee of around $300;
• Make a contribution to the culture of the workshop.

Returning participants who choose to apply for the 2017 residency will be given preference over new applicants. Why? Well, graphic novels take a long time to make and most of the projects that we workshopped in 2015 are still being made. We want to see through what we've started in 2015.

Our application process is simple but requires a bit of creativity. We want you to write a hand-written letter to Liz MacFarlane, the head of our selection committee. Your letter should begin ‘Dear Liz’ and should be no longer than four pages. In your own voice tell us about your project. Tell us about your creative practice. Tell us why you want to be a part of the Comic Art Workshop. Show us some stuff. Tell us a story. Make us laugh.

Your letter can include comics, drawings, prose, diagrams, collage, photographs — anything you like — but we’ll only accept hand-written applications in hard copy.

Include your contact details. We'll need an email address, your phone number and a returning postal address. We won't be able to return your application letter (actually we're really excited to keep them!) so be sure to make a copy.

Applications are open NOW and will close on the 31st of March 2017. We will let you know whether your application has been successful by snail mail before the 30th of April.

We’re happy to announce that two Australian cartoonists, Alisha Jade and Bruce Mutard has set up small funds to help cover the cost of attending our residency.

The Alisha Jade Fund will provide one artist with $500 to help pay for workshop fees, travel, or associated expenses. The qulaify for this fund you need to be a woman, a person of colour or someone who identifies as LGBTI.

The Bruce Mutard Fund will provide two artists $750 each to help pay for workshop fees, travel, or associated expenses.

We can only offer three artists these grants. If you want to be considered as one of the recipients of either fund please make this explicit in your application letter. Explain in one short paragraph why you feel you are eligible. Successful applicants will be notified in late April when they receive the outcome of their application to attend the Workshop.
